Podcamp in San Antonio

May 19, 2007, San Antonio will play host to Podcamp, the “unconference” on podcasting, blogging, vlogging and new social media. I’ll probably be dead tired from  conducting Tech-Beat, my semi-annual technology camp, but it looks like  something to check out, especially if Dad’s around at the time. He’s keen to learn more about these new social tools.

The New Breed of Web Designer

The hallmark of geek ADDness is the ability to drop whatever it is you are currently doing in hot pursuit of the shiny, new thing you’ve just discovered. And what does this have to do with a blog post on the new breed of web designer? Nothing really, except that in the process of exploring FeedRaider, I diverged into checking out posts about the Web 2.0 Expo, which in turn led me to a blog post by Richard McManus his Read/WriteWeb blog on a panel on hybrid design at the expo, which then prompted me to write this post. I guess I have severe geek ADD.

So what are the characteristics of this new breed of designer? To quote:

Writing semantic markup (transition to XML)
Providing Web services (moving away from place)
Remixing content (about when and what, not who or why)
Emergent navigation and relevance (users are in control)
Adding metadata over time (communities building social information)
Shift to programming (separation of structure and style)

Also check out a visual representation of the above summary.

And I just remembered, I still have to check out FeedRaider, don’t I?

FeedRaider

Was pointed to FeedRaider by a participant at the TCC Conference today. Like Google Reader, you just hover over the headlines to see more of the content. It has a nice crisp, clean, interface. Now, if it has a Firefox extension as well… ooh baby!

Life Without Firefox Extensions

is unimaginable to be perfectly honest. I can’t remember what I did before I had my “Tag” button to quickly tag a website to my del.icio.us site, or click on the del.icio.us icon button to access my del.icio.us site. Web site design and development probably took way more time before I had my handy-dandy Web Developer toolbar and Firebug to debug XHTML and CSS on the fly, and HTML Validator to validate my code. ScribeFire (previously Performancing) lets me blog as soon as an idea strikes, or at the very least, when I have the time to actually reflect and let an idea float through ;-) .

The crown jewel of them all however, is the Google Notebook extension. Google Notebook is my note taker for projects I’m working on, and the ability to immediately jot down a comment, idea, or question without having to worry about filing or keeping track of scraps of paper is invaluable in my opinion. And having a button that readily available to do it quickly and efficiently and return to the task at hand, even more so. Hmm, wonder if Firefox extensions would count as effective GTD tools by David Allen?

So, what’s in your Firefox?

OCulture – Educational Podcasts

Stumbled upon OCulture today. “Enlightened ideas and media. served up fresh” runs their tag line. Don’t know about the enlightened ideas as I haven’t really explored it in depth yet, but the site speaks to an academic audience from my quick peek at it, and the focus is primarily educational content including free courses from UC Berkeley and content from Yale.

Adobe CS3

Adobe trotted out their dog-and-pony shows today to demo CS3 and highlight some of the new features. The first thing that caught my eye was that the application icons have changed. Instead of abstract images, they now how an abbreviated version of the application name on a colored background – - for instance “FL” on red for Flash. They almost look like the color blocks you play with in kindergarten! I took specific note of new features in Photoshop and their Web design products, these caught my eye in Photoshop:

  • Quick Selection Tool – an easy way to select a part of an image to separate it from it’s background.
  • Refine Edges – allows you to refine the edges of a selection.
  • Smart Filters that allow you to apply effects selectively.
  • The Toolbox is a single column now and the app seems more panel driven.

All their products in their different suites have been upgraded to work on the newer OSs on the Windows machines and Macs including Windows Vista and Intel Macs. There are also some new features in Dreamweaver including a CSS advisor and an HTML advisor, but I may have to attend the Web products sessions to get more on that bundle.

And One Page To Bind Them All

How many social space profiles do you have? If you’re like me and trying to keep up with friends, each of whom seems to favour a different social space, chances are, many. Oh how I wish there was a single web page that would tie all these different social networks into one interface a la Trillian or Adium I said in passing to Brian who promptly undertook a search and discovered ProfileLinker, “an innovative web utility that allows you to link your social network profiles in one central location. Just what the doctor ordered!
